High School Robotics Competition Addresses A Critical Need

On Friday and Saturday, robots will descend upon Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawaii to participate in the 9th Annual FIRST in Hawaii Robotics Regional Competition.

"FIRST — For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology — is an international competition that engages high school students in the exciting and rewarding world of science, technology, engineering and math, popularly called #STEM in today’s educational jargon.
The robotics invasion at Manoa will host 38 teams with more than 1,000 students, representing 26 schools from across Hawaii, as well as two teams from the mainland and 11 international teams from China, Australia, Taiwan and Japan. Participation in the FIRST competition offers an inviting and challenging window of opportunity for high school students to experience an interesting, exciting and rewarding “slice” of the life of an engineer and scientist.
The design and building of a robot is a fascinating, real-world professional experience that each school team undertakes in order to solve a common engineering problem in a six-week time frame.
Issued a standard 70-pound kit of parts and a common set of rules, Hawaii’s student “mechanical wizards” are partnered with engineers from industry and academia as each school develops a prototype robot for a game played by the robots.
Students must program and remotely control their robots in rounds of competition. Referees oversee the game; judges evaluate the teams and present awards for robot design, technology, website design, 3D animation, public relation- ships, sportsmanship and commitment to FIRST standards.
The hoopla we all hear about robots in the high school curriculum is well-placed, and is dynamically enhanced through the competition that FIRST offers. Our students receive pragmatic lessons with the tools that science and engineering require in order for the professionals of tomorrow to engage in Hawaii’s future economic and business growth. Building math and science skills continues to receive much state and national attention as STEM professions grow 1.7 times faster than non-STEM careers.
Businesses in today’s global economy need creative problem-solvers with strong math and science backgrounds. To gain an edge in the 21st century, Hawaii’s students need to develop these skills in order to support the high-technology skills and competencies that our future will require. Indeed, Hawaii’s shortage of engineers and technical talent is real and current.
FIRST Robotics is a benchmark event that not only teaches our students to build robots and nurture their interest in the STEM fields, but also strengthens each student’s sense of well-being, self-esteem and dignity. These qualities provide an enhanced environment for learning, motivation, self discipline, responsibility and the ability to deal effectively with obstacles and challenges that life inevitably brings to every one of us over the years. FIRST has branded these qualities as “gracious professionalism.”
This exciting and invigorating competition is free and open to the public. It’s rated PG and can be enjoyed by the whole family." -Betty White, Sacred Hearts Academy, Head of School

C is for Coding and Computer Savvy

The Academy’s students not only use technology daily, but are learning to create technology in their coding classes. These classes are empowering, rewarding and just plain fun!

The coding curriculum begins in the first grade and continues through High School. Along the way, students fine-tune their programming fundamentals skills, tackle web and mobile development and design and delve into robotics. The first graders practice their coding skills with their “minibots” – Dash and Dot, programming them to move around, play music and more.

Those in middle school program animations and create video games. In the High School, the coders use industry-standard programs and understand the role technology has in shaping the world. With society’s every-increasing reliance on technology, it is imperative that the Academy’s students develop the skills essential for future success.

Academy Roboticists Need Your Help!

The Sacred Hearts Academy Lower School Robotics Team needs your help to prepare for their upcoming First Lego League (FLL) competition in November! Sixth grade team members Kylee and Chloe share how you & your family can help the Academy's team.

"This year's theme is Trash Trek and our competition consists of four parts – robot design, robot performance, project, and core values (teamwork).  We have been busy building our mission pieces, designing our robot, researching our project and developing our teamwork skills.  We are having so much fun!  For the project portion of this year’s competition we have to research a piece of trash, come up with a unique solution, and present our project to our community and a panel of judges.

We have chosen Styrofoam trays and we would really appreciate your help. Last week we went on a field trip to Times Supermarket to see how many food items use Styrofoam trays and we asked the meat and seafood department questions.

Now we need to know how our community uses Styrofoam trays. Please help our team by taking a quick five question survey - you can simply follow the link here: http://goo.gl/forms/5HVsvVoZDR

We are also trying to collect as many Styrofoam trays as we can for our project and presentation.  We would appreciate it if you could wash your trays and bring them to school. Our team mentors, Ms. Lacey Teshima, and Ms. Jennifer Arthur, will have a donation box outside their classrooms. We will be collecting trays from now until Friday, October 9, 2015. Thank you for your cooperation!"

Mahalo ladies of LS Robotics for sharing! Best of luck with your FLL challenge this year! #GoLancers

Sacred Hearts Academy VEX Robotics Teams Competed at VEXposition

On Saturday, September 9, 2014, two High School VEX robotics teams attended McKinley Vexposition at McKinley High School. Headed by Captain Kristen Tumacder, they had one robot that they had been working on since the end of May, 2014 which was dependable and a second that was a new design.

VEX Robotics Teams for Sacred Hearts Academy STEM Education
The drivers, Cameron Pires, Hudson Jones, and Jenna Tanna were comfortable with its maneuverability. The drivers prepared for the competition by having scrimmages on Saturdays with Island Pacific Academy, Mid-Pacific Institute, and Kaahumanu Elementary School. Out of 38 entrants, the team finished in 8th place with their alliance partners, Kalani High School and Christian Academy.

The programmers, Malia Libby and Aimee Pak, also gave the Autonomous Challenge a shot and achieved second placed among 11 entrants. They wrote the autonomous codes in ROBOTC. The objective was to stack as many Skyrise Sections as possible within 60 seconds and they scored 11 points.

The robot that was used in the Autonomous Challenge was nicknamed "High Maintenance" by the driver, Jenna Tanna. It had scissor lift design which was practical but complicated to design and maintain. It went through many iterations since May and a detailed record of its design and building process was kept in an engineering notebook.

Aimee Pak and Michaela Graves presented for the prestigious Design Award. This award qualifies the team to enter HECO Hawaii State Championship, on the island of Maui, on January 9-10, 2015. There was a happy accident where Aimee and Michaela went to the presentation without the robot. The judges were very impressed with their convincing presentation skills and they were sold on the design without even seeing the physical robot! Aimee and Michaela brought home the Design Award, getting their team in to the HECO Hawaii State Championship.

Our second team competed with a brand new, reverse 4-bar design, bot. For the robot's drivers, Ashley Lardizabal and Adrianne Del Rosario, this was their first experience driving it because the robot was just completed the day before the competition! They managed scoring enough to rank 23rd.

Lancer Robotics Team 2437 VEX Design Award
Winning the Design Award gave the team a lot of confidence in moving forward aggressively with expanded VEX programs in Junior High School and VEX IQ teams in Grade 6.  Robotics Teacher, Mr. Peter Park, and Sacred Hearts Academy is planning to host annual East-Oahu VEX and VEX IQ competitions beginning next school year at the Academy. Mr. Park is confident that within the next couple of years, Lancer Robotics will become a VEX robotics powerhouse!

You can keep up to date with all of the robotics activities by liking their Facebook Page or following the team on Instagram (@Team2437).
