Women leaders change face of world

Academy students partnered with dynamic, female mentors from the East-West Center's Changing Faces Women's Leadership Seminar (CFWLS).
In July, 30 Academy students partnered with dynamic, female mentors from the East-West Center's Changing Faces Women's Leadership Seminar (CFWLS). These entrepreneurs, hailing from 11 countries around the globe, including Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, shared about the projects or businesses each had started in their country.
The students met and mingled with the international participants and local community leaders in an informal reception at the Richards Street YWCA.
On July 22, the CFWLS mentors visited and toured the school's campus. They also listened to a presentation about women's leadership in the United States by Head of School Betty White; engaged in small group discussions about their projects and gave tips on leadership; and exchanged small gifts with the students.
Senior Jadeann Domanguera concluded, "I heard different insights of what it's like to take the lead and learned from Ritusmita Biswan of India  that life will have ups and downs, but I shouldn't let that stop me from following my heart."
Changing Women's Leadership Seminar is an ongoing project of the East-West Center, and Student Activities Director Toni Normand worked with Elizabeth Dorn and Ann Hartman to organize the event.

Team "speaks life" to excite Academy community

"Speak life!" is the challenge that the Living In Faith Experience (LIFE) team came away with from their summer Christian leadership retreat
"Speak life!" is the challenge that the Living In Faith Experience (LIFE) team came away with from their summer Christian leadership retreat in California this past summer.
"On fire" from their experience, Angela Hesch, Desiree Batangan, Angelique Racpan, Nicole Yamada, Megan  Garcia, Kaela Fiesta, Stella Lee, Jaclyn Sakamoto, Victoria Lee, Alyssa Ablao, Leeyannah Santos and Remi Tokunaga, together with moderators Cleo Eubanks and Mary Ellen Miller, intend to "use their words to inspire and spread love like fire" as TobyMac's song, "Speak Life," calls people to do.
Their mission this year is to excite and "fire up" the entire school community with a deepened experience of faith which will lead to changes in attitudes and actions. The team's goals are to:
  • Put the theme, Speak Life, into action;
  • Conduct a Water Awareness Campaign throughout the school year to be in solidarity with millions of people in the world who have little water or use polluted water;
  • Design and plan retreats for all grade levels that are meaningful, relevant and faith-filled.

The efforts to fulfill these goals begins on September 3 and 4 when the team will teach the song "Speak Life" during singing practice for the first Mass on September 5. They also will help the Liturgical Corps animate the Mass.
