Freshman Initiation Week at Sacred Hearts Academy

Freshman Initiation Week at Sacred Hearts Academy
The Academy’s ninth graders celebrated the milestone of entering High School with a Disney-themed Initiation Week. They were welcomed into the upper school community with traditional freshmen initiation festivities that took place during the week of September 22.

Freshman Initiation Week at Sacred Hearts Academy
Initiation events spanned the week and helped develop strong friendships between the freshmen and the junior divisions. The junior “big sisters” initiated their freshmen “little sisters” through participation in a variety of fun activities that fit each day’s theme.

A highlight of this year's initiations included “Tinker Bell Thursday.” This filled the hallways with the sounds of jingling bells attached to their ponytails, fairy wings and to parts of their uniforms.

The week culminated on September 29 with the annual Freshmen Initiation program. Following this year's Disney-theme, the juniors choreographed group dances for the freshmen to perform in front of an audience of students and teachers. This year's Sacred Hearts Academy freshmen are now officially initiated into the upper school community.

Sacred Hearts Academy VEX Robotics Teams Competed at VEXposition

On Saturday, September 9, 2014, two High School VEX robotics teams attended McKinley Vexposition at McKinley High School. Headed by Captain Kristen Tumacder, they had one robot that they had been working on since the end of May, 2014 which was dependable and a second that was a new design.

VEX Robotics Teams for Sacred Hearts Academy STEM Education
The drivers, Cameron Pires, Hudson Jones, and Jenna Tanna were comfortable with its maneuverability. The drivers prepared for the competition by having scrimmages on Saturdays with Island Pacific Academy, Mid-Pacific Institute, and Kaahumanu Elementary School. Out of 38 entrants, the team finished in 8th place with their alliance partners, Kalani High School and Christian Academy.

The programmers, Malia Libby and Aimee Pak, also gave the Autonomous Challenge a shot and achieved second placed among 11 entrants. They wrote the autonomous codes in ROBOTC. The objective was to stack as many Skyrise Sections as possible within 60 seconds and they scored 11 points.

The robot that was used in the Autonomous Challenge was nicknamed "High Maintenance" by the driver, Jenna Tanna. It had scissor lift design which was practical but complicated to design and maintain. It went through many iterations since May and a detailed record of its design and building process was kept in an engineering notebook.

Aimee Pak and Michaela Graves presented for the prestigious Design Award. This award qualifies the team to enter HECO Hawaii State Championship, on the island of Maui, on January 9-10, 2015. There was a happy accident where Aimee and Michaela went to the presentation without the robot. The judges were very impressed with their convincing presentation skills and they were sold on the design without even seeing the physical robot! Aimee and Michaela brought home the Design Award, getting their team in to the HECO Hawaii State Championship.

Our second team competed with a brand new, reverse 4-bar design, bot. For the robot's drivers, Ashley Lardizabal and Adrianne Del Rosario, this was their first experience driving it because the robot was just completed the day before the competition! They managed scoring enough to rank 23rd.

Lancer Robotics Team 2437 VEX Design Award
Winning the Design Award gave the team a lot of confidence in moving forward aggressively with expanded VEX programs in Junior High School and VEX IQ teams in Grade 6.  Robotics Teacher, Mr. Peter Park, and Sacred Hearts Academy is planning to host annual East-Oahu VEX and VEX IQ competitions beginning next school year at the Academy. Mr. Park is confident that within the next couple of years, Lancer Robotics will become a VEX robotics powerhouse!

You can keep up to date with all of the robotics activities by liking their Facebook Page or following the team on Instagram (@Team2437).

Gym's New Oak Flooring Blessed by Sister Katherine

Sister Katherine Francis blesses Sacred Hearts Academy Gym FloorAnxious athletes, coaches and Gym Revitalization Project leaders gathered for a quick blessing of the oak flooring on Monday afternoon. Sister Katherine said a prayer, blessed the beautiful new court and those that were present, as well as all who will be enjoying the future activities in the revitalized gym.
Gym Flooring Is Installed,
Blessed, & Ready For The Girls To Practice On!

Following the blessing, Andrea Hamilton (Director of Development) and Betty White (Head of School) shared a photo of what was probably the first "selfie" taken and posted online with the new gym floor in the background. This officially announced that the court was ready for use.

The revitalization project is not complete. The bleachers are currently en route to the Honolulu ports via boat and they are anticipated to be on island by the end of the week. The locker rooms and other facility support rooms are also still being worked on. For now, at least the court is available for the athletes to practice on.

In case you were wondering if Mrs. Hamilton and Mrs. White actually did take a true "selfie", here is the proof of that moment.

iTeach808 Sacred Hearts Academy and Augustine Educational Foundation

On Saturday, Sacred Hearts Academy hosted and co-sponsored the 3rd Annual iTeach808 with the Augustine Educational Foundation. The iTeach808 workshops are geared to teach the teachers how to use technology in their classrooms.

There were four technology workshops; t
hey were, iPad Tips and Tricks, iPad Apps, Google Classroom Workflow and App Smashing, and Early Childhood Education. The attendees pre-registered for the event and all sessions were filled weeks prior to iTeach808 taking place. Hand-on experiences with Apps like Tellagami and Notabilty provided the teachers with ideas on how iPad Apps can be integrated into the learning environment.

iTeach808 coordinator, Laurel Oshiro, created a short video using her iPad, iMovie App and iPad camera footage taken during the workshops to demonstrate how simple technology can be. Laurel is also the Library Media Specialist and mentors the Digital Media Club for the Sacred Hearts Academy Lower School.

Sacred Hearts Academy Celebrates 105th Birthday!

On Friday, September 12, 2014, Sacred Hearts Academy celebrated its 105th Birthday!

Student Council helped coordinate the morning celebration which took place in the courtyard. There was a dance-off between student representatives and teachers, resulting in a win for the students. Festive confetti launchers, balloons and cupcakes were all a part of the party.

From e-Parentline Volume XVVI, No. 5
Birthday celebrates school’s 105-year legacy
Students dressed down and enjoyed special treats;yellow and white balloons decorated the Quad; cheerleaders excited the crowd; “rockets” launched confetti into the air; and teachers showed students that they also know the moves to the latest dances.
It was, indeed, a glorious birthday celebration forthe Academy, with more than abundant Lancer Pride in the air.
Besides Campus Minister Sr. Katherine Francis Miller and Theology Chair Sr. Irene Barboza, (middle) eight other Sisters, including Provincial Sr.Regina Mary Jenkins, joined the party. Their loving presence reminded the school community at this enthusiastic celebration that the school’s history and roots are tied to the dedication of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts.
And, everything the school is doing today continually reinforces the Sisters’ mission of helping students discover and develop their many talents to be used in service to their families, church and communities.

Senior gains opportunity to study in Russia

Aina Katsikas, Reporter

Sprott was one of 15 American students selected from a pool of 3,500 students, ages 15 to 18 years old, by the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLIY), and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Legacy Dinner 2014

On Friday, September 5th, 2014, Sacred Hearts Academy hosted the annual Legacy Dinner. The Legacy Dinner has traditionally been an event that welcomes current Academy students that have prior generations that also attended Sacred Hearts Academy.

After the Mexican themed dinner, several games were played and families competed with others by table. This table of guests were rushing to complete a picture puzzle of the grotto to score a point.
