Academy Roboticists Need Your Help!

The Sacred Hearts Academy Lower School Robotics Team needs your help to prepare for their upcoming First Lego League (FLL) competition in November! Sixth grade team members Kylee and Chloe share how you & your family can help the Academy's team.

"This year's theme is Trash Trek and our competition consists of four parts – robot design, robot performance, project, and core values (teamwork).  We have been busy building our mission pieces, designing our robot, researching our project and developing our teamwork skills.  We are having so much fun!  For the project portion of this year’s competition we have to research a piece of trash, come up with a unique solution, and present our project to our community and a panel of judges.

We have chosen Styrofoam trays and we would really appreciate your help. Last week we went on a field trip to Times Supermarket to see how many food items use Styrofoam trays and we asked the meat and seafood department questions.

Now we need to know how our community uses Styrofoam trays. Please help our team by taking a quick five question survey - you can simply follow the link here: http://goo.gl/forms/5HVsvVoZDR

We are also trying to collect as many Styrofoam trays as we can for our project and presentation.  We would appreciate it if you could wash your trays and bring them to school. Our team mentors, Ms. Lacey Teshima, and Ms. Jennifer Arthur, will have a donation box outside their classrooms. We will be collecting trays from now until Friday, October 9, 2015. Thank you for your cooperation!"

Mahalo ladies of LS Robotics for sharing! Best of luck with your FLL challenge this year! #GoLancers

Leo Club Braves Weather for YWCA Kokokahi Community Fair

Community service is a big part of the curriculum of the Academy's Campus Ministry.  Service clubs like the Sacred Hearts AcademyLeo Club, sponsored by the Kamehameha Lions Club & Foundation, often provides opportunities for its members to be active in their community.
Leos Jordan Higuchi and Angelina Gomes assisted at the YWCA’s Camp Kokokahi Community Fair. The girls braved the stormy weather to man one of the activities booths. This annual event celebrates the Windward community and our Hawaiian heritage; it featured local entertainers, a craft fair, and helped local organizations to raise awareness for their causes.

First Grade Explores Plants

Academy first graders recently visited the Lyon Arboretum as a supplemental field trip to their class curriculum to learn about plants. In class, the girls are learning about plant parts and what plants need in order to survive. In a classroom activity, Ariane N. and Cherish M. drew their observations of a Morning Glory plant.

At the Lyon Arboretum, Rylee N. and Kayla K. enjoyed the hands on activity to find the tree trunk, or stem of the tree, that fits perfectly with its matching "tree belt". Mahalo to Academy first grade teacher, Dr. Sharon Fukayama for sharing the great photos!

A is for Apple

The Sacred Hearts Academy students in Ms. Knebel’s JK class celebrated Apple Day!  Students ate a red apple, green apple and a yellow apple to determine their favorite apple taste! The girls also created a graph to see how
many friends liked each apple!

Then they used their thinking skills to see how many bears heavy an apple is. What an apple-astic time! Who knew that something as simplistic as an #Apple could have so many educational and mathematical aspects!
