Trimble China Scholars Learn About Chinese Opera

During the upcoming Fall Break a select group of Sacred Hearts Academy Trimble China Scholars will be participating in a cultural exchange trip to Fujian, China, where they will partner with girls at Fujian Hwa Nan Women's College
Fujian Hwa Nan Women's College & Fuqing Middle School professors Nell Wu and Linda Chen traveled to Hawaii to orient Academy students ahead of the exchange to provide an orientation to the girls on various topics of Chinese culture including the Chinese Opera.
“Masks have been used in Chinese opera for a thousand years. The colors on the masks stirs up specific emotions that allows the audience to feel and understand the story being told.
For example, red symbolizes intelligence, heroism and integrity; purple conveys nobleness and justice; black represents neutralness and altruism; and yellow portrays treachery and ferociousness.
In a Peking opera, even you don’t understand it, let the color be your translator.”
-Professor Linda Chen, Fuqing Middle School

Following the presentation the Trimble China Scholars picked their own colors and painted their own masks to represent what they feel.

Leo or Leona the Lion

Ashley Robinson, 1st Grade, Sacred Hearts Academy
Academy 1st graders are learning to “draw from reference,” which means looking at a picture carefully, and drawing what you see. Students practiced using their knowledge of the different line families to determine what type of line to draw next: straight, curved or angled.

Next, they used their imagination to create a more realistic or imaginary setting for the lion. Some really show off their sense of humor by including details like the lions underwear hanging on a hanger in their room, or a heavenly lion on cloud wearing a halo.
Kanoe Kostiha, 1st Grade, Sacred Hearts Academy

Drawings were colored in with markers, and oil pastel for the background. They experimented with using the side of the oil pastel to create a bumpy texture, coloring like a crayon or “smudging”  it for a softer look.

Artists Fall Into Spirit of Season

Motivated by the features of fall, the Academy's aspiring artists are channeling the signs and sounds of the season into their festive creations! However, despite Halloween looming soon, the Lower School students are taking their efforts beyond simply recreating classic, iconic characters.

They are delving into history and cultural traditions and the use of varied art tools, techniques and practices, including color theory and mixed media, during the creative process.

These works of art, including the second graders' "Sugar Skulls," based on decor from the celebrations of "Dia Des Los Muertos," or "Day of the Dead," will be unveiled soon - along with a few ghosts too!

2nd Graders Explore Warm & Cool Colors

A visit to the Sacred Hearts Academy lower school Art Cabinet display of "Warm & Cool Suns" is the perfect way to brighten your day!

The 2nd Grade colorful sun mosaic art project explored different ways of drawing a sun. Students then turned they’re drawings into a mosaic by painting watered down glue onto alternating colored tissue paper focusing on "warm" and "cool" colors.

"Suns are a fun thing to draw because there are so many variations. The rays can be straight lines, wavy lines, or even triangles!" -Ms. Malia Urie, Lower School Art Teacher

Academy Students Participate in Kakizome Traditon

Academy Japanese classes started the New Year with Kakizome, calligraphy “first writing”, wishing for the success in their language learning.
Traditionally, elementary schools in Japan start their New Year with calligraphy, writing characters related to the New Year.
Kakizome is a traditional Japanese calligraphy written at the beginning of the year or more precisely on the 2nd of January. In modern times, people often write out auspicious kanji . School pupils up to senior high school are assigned kakizome as their winter holiday homework. Each year on January 5, several thousand calligraphers gather in Tokyo for a kakizome event that is widely covered by media. The kakizome paper is usually burned on the 14th of January during the festival. If the burning paper flies high, it is said that the person will be able to write a more fair hand.

This year, the students in Japanese 2, 2 Honors wrote 元旦 which means the morning of the new year’s day. The students in 3 Honors, 4, 5 and AP classes wrote, é…‰ or 酉年 which means the year of the rooster.

First Grade Explores Plants

Academy first graders recently visited the Lyon Arboretum as a supplemental field trip to their class curriculum to learn about plants. In class, the girls are learning about plant parts and what plants need in order to survive. In a classroom activity, Ariane N. and Cherish M. drew their observations of a Morning Glory plant.

At the Lyon Arboretum, Rylee N. and Kayla K. enjoyed the hands on activity to find the tree trunk, or stem of the tree, that fits perfectly with its matching "tree belt". Mahalo to Academy first grade teacher, Dr. Sharon Fukayama for sharing the great photos!

Third Graders Meet the Authors

Earlier this year, the Academy third graders embarked on a learning journey to “Meet the Author,” a multi-faceted biography project.

Each student chose a published book author and researched their lives, accomplishments and societal impact. Using their findings, the students created a timeline of the author’s key life events, used the Chatterpix app to explain his or her impact on the world and created a biography presentation.

The students also designed a commemorative stamp which the United States Postal Service might use and a character from one of the author’s books using a two-liter bottle.

The culminating event of the project was on April 24 when the students, donned in a poster board “body” of their chosen author and presented their findings to parents, teachers and other Lower School students.

Some of the authors sighted were Tori Spelling, Ronald Dahl and Dr. Seuss.

4th Grade Art Show

Lower School Art teacher Malia Urie staged an art show featuring work done by artists from the fourth grade. On April 24, students viewed the work during a morning session, and parents visited the show in the Student Center in the evening.
One of the highlights of this year’s show was the display of large sculptures, created by teams of four to five fourth graders. Using cardboard tubes, paper towels, wrapping paper, paint and other varied decorating material, the groups created these large creations, utilizing engineering skills as well, over the course of about eight class sessions.

Artists Work to Ensure No Bowls Are Empty

This year, Academy students, under the guidance of Kaycie Baltunado, participated in the 2015 Empty Bowl Project, hosted by the Hawai’i Potters Guild and Hawai’i Meals on Wheels and aimed at fighting hunger in the community.

Professional artists and students from Iolani School, Mid-Pacific Institute, Punahou School and the Academy, including Baltunado’s Ceramics II students who contributed over 200 pieces, made ceramic bowls which were donated to the Project.

On April 11 at Our Kaka’ako, the donated bowls were sold and, then, filled with soup provided by restaurants across Oahu, including Side Street Inn and Mariposa at Neiman Marcus.
