Trimble China Scholars Learn About Chinese Knots

During the upcoming Fall Break a select group of Sacred Hearts Academy Trimble China Scholars will be participating in a cultural exchange trip to Fujian, China, where they will partner with girls at Fujian Hwa Nan Women's College. 
Fujian Hwa Nan Women's College & Fuqing Middle School professors Nell Wu and Linda Chen traveled to Hawaii to orient Academy students ahead of the exchange to provide an orientation to the girls on various topics of Chinese culture including the intricacy of Chinese Knotting.

“Chinese knotting is a decorative handicraft art that began as a form of Chinese folk art in the Tang and Song dynasty in China. The technique was later popularized in the Ming dynasty and spread to Japan and Korea.

Chinese knot decorations can often be seen hanging on walls, doors of homes, and as shop decorations to add some festival feel. Usually, these decorations are red in color, which traditional Chinese regards as a color of luck.”

Following the presentation the Trimble China Scholars had the opportunity to try their hand at creating decorative Chinese Knots themselves.

Trimble China Scholars Learn About Chinese Opera

During the upcoming Fall Break a select group of Sacred Hearts Academy Trimble China Scholars will be participating in a cultural exchange trip to Fujian, China, where they will partner with girls at Fujian Hwa Nan Women's College. 
Fujian Hwa Nan Women's College & Fuqing Middle School professors Nell Wu and Linda Chen traveled to Hawaii to orient Academy students ahead of the exchange to provide an orientation to the girls on various topics of Chinese culture including the Chinese Opera.

“Masks have been used in Chinese opera for a thousand years. The colors on the masks stirs up specific emotions that allows the audience to feel and understand the story being told. 

For example, red symbolizes intelligence, heroism and integrity; purple conveys nobleness and justice; black represents neutralness and altruism; and yellow portrays treachery and ferociousness. 

In a Peking opera, even you don’t understand it, let the color be your translator.”

Following the presentation the Trimble China Scholars picked their own colors and painted their own masks to represent what they feel.

A Prayer For A New School Year

Lord, we thank you for the unique gifts of every new and returning Sacred Hearts Academy student and their families as we transition into a new school year. 

Fill each of our girls with fresh enthusiasm and a heart that is excited to learn and grow. 

Cover them with your enduring love, give them confidence and grace, and equip them with the ability to persevere.

A Message from Dr. Scott Schroeder, Sacred Hearts Academy Head of School

July 12, 2019

Aloha Sacred Hearts Community,

I am now at work as the Academy’s Head of School, getting ready for the start of a great school year. I want to mark this beginning by expressing my gratitude for all the support and best wishes I’ve received and my deep pride in our school and our community. I particularly want to thank Betty White for her generous help in getting me oriented to the Head of School role.

I will be spending much of the coming year getting to know the Academy and building relationships.  Charting the path ahead for the Academy will be driven by a deep understanding of our school’s greatest strengths and how to leverage them to meet the educational needs and emerging interests of families on Oahu.  Of course, we will continue our core dedication to programs, ways of teaching and a campus environment that is distinctively beneficial to girls and young women.

During the next few months, I will be doing a lot of listening to learn what your ideas and ambitions are for our school and for yourselves, and I will be providing meeting opportunities for those conversations. While I have my own personal perspective that comes from years of professional experience in Catholic education, as well as years as a Sacred Hearts parent and member of the Academy’s Board of Directors, I intend to broaden that perspective so that we can set a direction that will make Sacred Hearts Academy the school that every parent with a daughter should consider for their child.

I will do my utmost to serve the Academy with wisdom and enthusiasm. I am wholly committed to Sacred Hearts’ educational mission and to positively impacting Hawaii and the wider world around us through the presence and efforts of our outstanding graduates.

Sacred Hearts Academy is an exceptional institution, and I am honored to serve now as Head of School. I am excited about our future and the great things we will accomplish together!

How did you spend your #SummerBreak? A group of Sacred Hearts Academy girls and Center for Tomorrow's Leaders partnered once again with the East-West Center to participate in the #galswithLEI forum on July 17th, 2019. An outstanding opportunity for our girls to network with women innovators and participate in powerful discussions surrounding leadership, entrepreneurship, and inspiration, while celebrating women in the STEM field.
