"S" Club assists Soroptimist Fundraiser

"S" Club assists Soroptomist Fundraiser
Shajaira Fiesta, Tiana Wong, Janelle Medrano, Kayla Galima, Chloe Huang
and can you guess which one is Mr. Fong?
Throughout history women and girls have faced additional obstacles and discrimination solely because of gender.  Sacred Hearts Academy students have an "S" Club, sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Waikiki.  Mentored by these outstanding ladies (and a few men), the Academy students feel uniquely qualified to help women and girls live their dreams.

Recently, the "S" Club assisted at the Soroptimist fundraiser at Ala Moana Hotel;  they were joined by their advisor and college counselor, Randy Fong, aka Frankenstein.

A 'spookingly' time was had by all!

The Academy Soroptimist Club, also known as the "S" Club, is a leadership and community service organization. Members serve their school and community through participation in various service activities, such as painting over neighborhood graffiti, working with the elderly at the Franciscan Day Care Center, ushering at University of Hawai'i plays and Adopt-a-Highway clean-up projects. Counseling Department Helps to Raise Awareness of National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. The counseling department has taken on the national movement to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention at Sacred Hearts Academy. Wednesday, October 22nd,  was National Unity Day, where students wear orange nationwide to show their support for national anti-bullying initiatives. Students were challenged to “Unite Against Bullying” by pledging their names on our UNITY banner! If students took the challenge and made a commitment of creating a positive environment at school, they received an orange ribbon to wear!

Sacred Hearts Academy 2014 Scholarship Fund Gala

This annual gala is the main source of funding for the Sacred Hearts Academy. The event takes place at the Sheraton Waikiki on Friday, October 17, 2014. Guests will begin arriving at 5:30 PM and will have the opportunity to view and bid on silent auction items. There will also be a raffle with multiple prizes. Dinner is served at 6:30 PM along with entertainment and a program that will feature this year's Distinguished Alumnae: Geri-Ann Baptista, ’86; Paula Hee Ng, ’78; Faith Rivera, ’89; Alethea Au Seto, ’80; Margaret Mary Kula Stafford, ’52 and Mona Chang Vierra, ’62.

The Distinguished Alumnae

Geri-Ann Baptista, '86
Geri-Ann Baptista began her professional life working in various Honolulu media outlets before moving to Seattle in 1991 to study for a Juris Doctorate from the University of Washington School of Law. Already holding a Bachelor's Degree in American Studies and Journalism from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM), Baptista practiced corporate litigation and was a trial attorney in both Washington and Hawai'i for 10 years. She now provides strategic public relations counsel to top corporations and non-profit organizations. Baptista is especially devoted to developing and managing social responsibility and citizenship initiatives.

Baptista and her husband Jason Allan have three sons, Carter, Jace and Mateo, and the family continues to reside in Seattle.

Paula Hee Ng, '78
Growing up with parents who believed in the value of a Catholic education, it was only natural that Paula Hee Ng and her two younger sisters, Diane, '79, and Theresa, '81, attended the Academy. And, the family's Academy tradition continued with Ng's daughter, Amanda, who graduated in 2012, and her nieces, Candace Nakanishi, '04, and Victoria Hee, '11. Ng attended Creighton University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy, and working as a retail pharmacist and is currently employed at Pharmacare Hawai'i.

Ng and her husband, Dennis, who is a doctor of pharmacy, also have two sons, Daniel and Loren.

Alethea Au Seto, '80
With 12 years of Catholic education "roots," it was only natural that Alethea Au Seto, '80, would send her daughters Alexandra, '15, and Samantha, '18, to the Academy.

After graduating from the Academy, Seto began her 30-plus year career in the financial industry with First Interstate Bank (FIB) of Hawai'i in the mid-1980's. Her experience includes tenures with FIB in California and Wells Fargo before she joined First Hawaiian Bank (FHB), where she currently works.  At FHB, Seto has worked in numerous departments and currently is senior vice president and division manager of the bank's Sales, Service and Retail Training Division.

Seto resides in Hawai'i Kai with her husband Scott and their two daughters and son Jacob; her oldest son Joshua lives on the mainland.

Faith Rivera, '89
Born on Kauai, Faith Rivera, '89, enrolled at the Academy in 1976, and it was during her high school years that she began to inspire others through her music. Rivera is an Emmy Award-winning composer and owns her own record label and publishing company, Lil' Girl Creations. In addition to her own high-energy performances, her music has been featured on numerous television shows, including Hawai'i 5-0, ER and Scrubs, and she has had the honor of performing with other prominent artists, including Luther Vandross and Neil Young.

Rivera, who resides in Long Beach with her husband Nolan Hee and son Kai, is also active with various community entities and earned a Community Service Award from the City and County of Los Angeles and the California State Senate and Assembly.

Margaret Mary Kula Stafford, ‘52
After graduating from the Academy, Margaret Mary Kula Stafford traveled to Guam where she began a 36 year career with the Federal Government and worked for the United States Army.

She was an active member of Lehua Toastmistress Club and the Waikiki Business and Professional Women’s Club, and served as President of Ahahui Kaahumanu, a benevolent society of Hawaiian women.  She is actively involved in her parish, St. Augustine by the Sea.

Margaret Mary has enjoyed traveling the world and met her husband, Lewis, while working in Saudi Arabia.

Mona Chang Vierra, ‘62
Mona Chang Vierra distinguished herself as a Hawaii Department of  Education (DOE) school, district , and state administrator.  After earning undergraduate degrees at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Southern California.

She was responsible for creating and implementing the original laptop program, “Laptops for Learning” and designing “Community Entrepreneurs” where schools created businesses within schools and marketed their products.

Since her retirement from the Department of Education, Vierra has published a Cantonese cookbook and is the co-owner of Grand Café & Bakery where her son Anthony is the Executive Chef.

Mona is a parishioner at St. Pius X Church.

Seventh Graders Take on Challenges at Camp

Sacred Hearts Academy Seventh Graders Take on Challenges at Camp Erdman
On October 2 and 3, 53 excited Sacred Hearts Academy seventh graders boarded two buses to trek to Camp Erdman on the North Shore in Waialua to participate in its leadership program. As with the classes before them, the trip is geared to help them “reach beyond their limits,” ease the transition to Junior High, build bonds between classmates and enhance self-esteem, communication and cooperation skills.

Sacred Hearts Academy Seventh Graders Take on Challenges at Camp Erdman
The itinerary for both days at camp were filled with safe, fun and challenging activities, and the students delved into them with enthusiasm.

Sacred Hearts Academy Seventh Graders Take on Challenges at Camp Erdman
The first day, the seventh graders faced one of their biggest challenges on the Odyssey High Ropes Course. Fitted with harnesses, the students climbed a tower 50-feet tall and made their way across the course to the other side, accompanied by cheers and shouts of encouragement from their classmates, teachers and chaperones. In the process, they overcame their fears and increased their self-confidence.

At night, the seventh graders enjoyed a toasty bon fire and participated in skits with camp leaders. Later during evening cabin time, they reflected and bonded as a small community, sharing stories and tons of laughter.

The next day, group challenges were the theme, as the students worked with their peers to complete various activities.

The seventh graders and the adult chaperones returned to campus on Friday exhausted and drained, but equipped with new skills and memories that will last a lifetime.

It was not only exciting to see the students work together to cheer each other on to complete the individual and group challenges. It was amazing to see each student gain confidence and grow mentally and emotionally with each other as a community over the course of the two days of Camp. We had such a positive experience that has set the tone for the remainder of the year. Many of the students enjoyed the trip so much, they are asking to go back!

Sacred Hearts Academy Hosts Hawaii Speech League Tournament

Sacred Hearts Academy Hosts Hawaii Speech League Tournament
On Saturday, October 4, the first Hawaii Speech League tournament of the year was held at Sacred Hearts Academy. The Sacred Hearts "home team" did well! Junior Summer Tsukenjo earned a certificate for multiple superiors in the category of Program Reading. She spoke on the topic of motherhood, drawing from pieces by Erma Bombeck and Tina Fey. Freshman Serena Luttropp also participated in Program Reading, focusing on the topic of music, with pieces by Juhan Liiv and John Updike, among others.

Four Academy students spent the day as senators, participating in the category of Congressional Debate. Senior Zoe Sprott earned recognition for placing third in Student Congress. Senior Kristen Andres and freshman Jade Spallina ranked among the top eight in Congress, and rookie senator and senior Ka'ua Arelliano earned positive comments as well from judges.

Many Academy students volunteered to be timekeepers, and some of them have decided to attend the next tournament as participants. The November 1 tournament will be held at Kaiser High School.

Teachers Margy O’Kelly and Gaylen Isaacs and parent Sheri Luttropp served as judges for the day.  The speech team advisor is Jill Sprott.

Mayor Kirk Caldwell Visits Sacred Hearts Academy's American Government Class

Mayor Kirk Caldwell Visits Sacred Hearts Academy's American Government Class
The American Government class invited Mayor Kirk Caldwell to come and speak to them on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014. Mayor Caldwell won the election for mayor of Honolulu in 2012. Mayor Caldwell was asked to address topics such as the importance of government, issues facing Honolulu, and the upcoming November elections. Students were also allowed to prepare questions for the mayor and he will try to address as many of them as possible during our time together.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell Visits Sacred Hearts Academy's American Government Class

The audience brought up questions about Honolulu's rail project, the recent Board of Water Supply billing changes, homeless issues, affordable housing, and how they could be more involved and engaged with projects that the mayor is currently working on.

The class will be completing a reflection assignment on their thoughts of today’s presentation. They will discuss any questions that may have arisen during the mayor's presentation, but did not have the opportunity to ask during the session.

The American Government class is especially grateful to Randy Perreira, father of Katie Perreira ’15, for putting us in touch with the mayor’s office.
