Academy Student Participates in John Hopkins CTY Summer Program

Sacred Hearts Academy sophomore Jenna Tanna spent part of her summer participating in John Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth summer program at Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, Maryland.

For three weeks in June/July, Jenna attended a Whales & Estuary Systems course where students learned about the whales at StellwagenBank near Boston, Massachusetts, and compared and contrasted estuary systems along the northeast coast.

During the eight-day field component, students sailed and slept aboard the LadyMaryland, a 104-foot schooner, and traveled through portions of the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, Hudson River, Long Island Sound, Narragansett Bay, Peconic Bay, and the North Atlantic Ocean. Throughout their voyage, students employed scientific equipment, such as plankton and neuston nets and video microscopes, to analyze water and marine life in these estuarine environments.  The students were involved in all aspects of the Lady Maryland’s operation, including raising sail, navigating, taking the helm, and performing daily ship maintenance.

During the land component, students investigated whale anatomy, physiology, adaptation, and behavior. They used DNA fingerprinting as a technique in whale identification and continued their studies in estuarine dynamics.

This was Jenna’s fourth year participating in Johns Hopkins University’s CTY program.  Last summer, she attended a Volcanoes class at Seattle University.  In 2014, she studied Zoology at Haverford College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  In 2013, she studied Science, Engineering and Thermodynamics at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.

At all four colleges, Jenna enjoyed interacting with other students from all over the world in a collaborative environment to strengthen her science, technology, engineering and mathematics (#STEM) skills.

Parents and Students:

The Academy has been alerted that the left turn into 5th Avenue will be open at 2:15 p.m. today. The school ‘begged’ for 2 p.m., but they could not promise.

The work will continue through Tuesday at the intersection of 5th and Waialae. However, there should be no worries about a left lane closure into 5th Avenue from Wednesday-Friday.

Thanks for your patience and cooperation. It was a beautiful first day of school here on campus!

Aloha,

Guest Speaker Kapono Ciotti

Sacred Hearts Academy faculty spent a dedicated week in professional development and in-service opportunities, all in preparation for a new school year. Kapono Ciotti, Head of Waialae Public Charter School, the Academy’s neighbor here in Kaimuki, left one lingering question in the minds of teachers:

“What gifts do we bring to our students this school year?”

And, now teachers are transferring that question to their young girls. How blessed to start the new school year with each student bringing special and unique gifts to our learning communities!

Sit Down Panel With Incoming Seniors

The Sacred Hearts Academy faculty and administration had the week of August 1st to prepare for a new school year.  Many insightful and inspirational presentations and experiences were enjoyed, but none was more delightful than a panel presentation by members of the incoming senior class, facilitated by Student Activities Director, Cleo Eubanks.

Two probing questions produced revealing answers. "What do you intend to do for the student body this year?"

And, the second question:  "One word that describes your experience at Sacred Hearts?"  Answers:  Community, Respect, Pride, Achievement, Inspiring, and Good-Hearted.
