Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

The Academy showed strong support for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on October 18.

Teacher Masa Yamaguchi played his bagpipes at the start of the race while 18 student volunteers, including members of the newly elected Freshmen council, joined Vice-Principal Kinga Sanders and Director of Student Activities Toni Normand at the water station organized by the Zonta Club.  There was even support from a Saint Louis School Crusader brother! Academy volunteers cheered on the 5,000+ participants, including Junior Counselor Cleo Eubanks and Academy parent  Darci Ludington.

Proceeds from next week’s Sacred Hearts Academy Costume for A Cause on October 30 will  be donated to the American Cancer Society in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

100 Books Challenge Update

The Lower School Library’s Read To Succeed Program has a new reading challenge for students!  Students in grades JK-6th grade are challenged to explore different genres of literature and read 100 books this school year.  Every time they turn in their monthly reading log, they earn a free personal pan Pizza Hut Book It coupon.  Students must read a minimum of 15 books a month with at least 20 pages for the next 7 months to earn a gold reading medal, prizes, and a 100 Books Challenge certificate.  Currently, 151 students are attempting to read 100 books this school year and discovering new books every day!

Skype An Author

Children’s book author Martha Rodgriguez, mother of Academy alumna Jacqueline Rodriguez, '12, visited the second and third grade classes via Skype this past week.  Students were able to learn more about what it’s like to be author, how to get inspiration, and how to publish a book.  

They also shared what their favorite moments were in her book A Reel Cool Summer based on real events. Afterwards, students participated in several dramatic role playing activities to help them to use more descriptive words in their writing.  Students had so much fun that they didn’t want it to end.  They will be applying these lessons to their author and movie contest in library class later on this quarter.

Lancer Robotics Hosts 1st Lancer VEX IQ Challenge

Parent Kimberly Ramos didn’t know what to expect when she came to watch her daughter Sophia Ramos (3rd) participate in her first VEX IQ competition. “Who knew how much crazy, chaotic, excitement would be going on at a Robotics Competition. Surprisingly fun!” From 7am to 5pm, T.C. Ching Student Center was abuzz with over a hundred young roboticists competing in over 110 matches!

Lancer Robotic’s inaugural Lancer VEX IQ Challenge was a big success with many student and parent volunteers.  The MCs Madison Iwashita (4th) and Tya Hunter (5th) were great MCs with good public speaking confidence.  The event opened with Andromeda Tong (5^th) the Star Spangled Banner and Hawaii Ponoi with her beautiful voice.

There were 23 teams participating from 12 elementary and middle schools around the island. Lancer Robotics had two Lower School and two Jr. HS teams – Sara Inao (3^rd), Sadie Takaki (3^rd), Sophia Ramos (3^rd), Sophia Pedrosa (3^rd), Aureanna Vendiola (3^rd), Abegail Aguirre (4^th), Nanami Mehring (6^th), Hunter Kim (7^th), Auli’i Ludington (8^th), and Lauren Matsukawa (8^th). Congratulations to our 3^rd grade team Sara Inao and Sadie Takaki for ranking 10^th overall in qualification matches and entering the finals!

The tournament champions were the Navigator Robotics Team 4442C from Island Pacific Academy and the Mililani Masters Team 11173B (an independent team). They were the dominant forces with their incredible robots, winning the Design Award (4442C), Judges Award (11173B), Robot Skills Champion Award (4442C), Programming Skills Champion Award (11173B), and Sportsmanship Award (4442C).

First Grade Plant Tasting Party

Academy first graders have been learning how to observe and document plants going through the life cycle stages. To wrap up the science unit on plants, the girls had a plant tasting party! 

Each student brought in an edible plant part to share with her classmates. They needed to identify the plant name and specific plant part that would be consumed. The girls were amazed to find out that broccoli was the flower part of the plant!
