Japanese flower arrangement brings harmony

Three Ikebana sensei from Ikebana International youth educational project team visited the Sacred Hearts Academy campus to share their Ikebana knowledge to our Japanese III students on January 22. The class started with a brief lecture on its history and concept and then students were very fortunate to have opportunity to experience a hands-on Ikebana activity. The structure of a Japanese flower arrangement is usually based on a scalene triangle delineated by three main points, Ten (heaven), Chi(earth), and Jin (man) and this could also mean “HARMONY”. Samurai used to practice Ikebana years ago during the war times and our Ikebana teachers commented that more and more people should practice / learn Ikebana so we will have more harmony in our society.

Takeaways from Dr. Paul Deering and Dr. Deborah Zuercher's Parenting Workshop

Esteemed education experts Drs. Paul Deering and Deborah Zuercher from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa returned to campus for inspirational workshops with faculty on January 13 and parents on January 14, which focused on “The 4 L’s of Parenting a Teen: Love, Listening, Limits and Laughter.”

Five Takeways for Parents:

  • A child cannot change who or what they are, but can change their behavior or action.
  • Every day, express affection and make positive contact, including giving attention – which requires shutting off electronics.
  • Listening is hard to do. Silence is golden and “shelve” the advice.
  • Employ logical consequences for behavior or choices.
  • Laugh with them, at them and at yourself.

27 Graduates Return to Campus for Alumnae Forum

Sacred Hearts Academy Alumnae Forum
On Tuesday, January 6, Sacred Hearts Academy hosted 27 graduates for the annual Alumnae Forum. This was an excellent opportunity our recent  graduates to share their experiences and knowledge about college life. Over 20 different colleges were represented such as John Hopkins University, University of Southern California, Creighton University, Princeton University, New York University and the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Part of the day included having a mini college fair where alumnae manned tables in the Student Center and answered questions about their respective campuses. The highlight of the day was panel discussions with each division which had a question/answer format. Topics such as being away from family, class workload, high school vs college courses, dormitory issues, changing of majors, scholarships, and balancing study time with involvement in extracurricular activities.
