Academy fourth grade Hawaiian Studies' students had a great time spending a day at the Papahana Kuaola site of Waipao, located in the ahupua'a of He'eia. Here, the students learned about Hawaii's cultural and natural history, environmental restoration, and economic sustainability, all fully integrated to exemplify a lifestyle respectful of kanaka (people), aina (land), and akua (god).
Sabrina Kopf and Paige Fullerton went into the lo'i (kalo patch) to get a sample of one of the native plants they had studied about in Hawaiiana. They also helped by ridding the lo'i of any invasive grass and weeds.
