Grandparents Honored During Season of Giving

In honor of the vital role kupuna play in the lives of their grandchildren, the Academy staged its annual Grandparents’ Day celebrations on November 19 and 20. Over 700 grandparents visited campus during the festivities and spent quality time with their granddaughters.

On Thursday, students in grades seven to 12 hosted their grandparents during the “Share Our Blessings” prayer services in the Gymnasium, before heading off to classrooms for fun games, activities and refreshments. On Friday, grandparents of students in grades Junior Kindergarten to six were treated to a myriad of activities, including class videos and songs in their honor to weaving place-mats to more formal programs.

No matter what their class’ activity was, the students were thrilled to honor their grandparents and share quality time, in class, with them.

Marching to Honor Nation’s Veterans

A contingent from the Academy honored the sacrifices made by those serving in the military, past and present, by participating in the 69th Annual Veterans’ Day Parade in Wahiawa on November 11.

Academy Band Director Keith Higaki
and 70 musicians and 10 color guard members proudly marched down California Avenue, playing “Kohala March” and “Bang Bang.” They were led by the Academy’s Intermediate cheerleaders, who carried a “Mahalo Veterans” banner made special for the parade. This marked the return of the Band to the Veterans’ festivities after a four-year absence, and Higaki was thrilled with the enthusiasm displayed by the Marching Band and
those in attendance.

In addition to the Marching Band and cheerleaders, abo
ut 14 members of the Leo Club, accompanied by Advisor Whitney Miyahira, also participated, passing out candy and further augmenting the appreciation on display for the hard work and sacrifice of America’s Veterans.

C is for Coding and Computer Savvy

The Academy’s students not only use technology daily, but are learning to create technology in their coding classes. These classes are empowering, rewarding and just plain fun!

The coding curriculum begins in the first grade and continues through High School. Along the way, students fine-tune their programming fundamentals skills, tackle web and mobile development and design and delve into robotics. The first graders practice their coding skills with their “minibots” – Dash and Dot, programming them to move around, play music and more.

Those in middle school program animations and create video games. In the High School, the coders use industry-standard programs and understand the role technology has in shaping the world. With society’s every-increasing reliance on technology, it is imperative that the Academy’s students develop the skills essential for future success.
