Coming Soon: Sister Act

Sacred Hearts Academy will bring to the stage the Broadway musical “Sister Act” at the Dr. Richard T. Mamiya Theatre this November. 

Sister Act is the feel-good musical comedy smash based on the hit 1992 film that had audiences jumping to their feet! Featuring original music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors), this uplifting musical was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. 

When a disco diva witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won't be a found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, she breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover. The gang soon chases after her, only to find themselves up against the power of her newly found sisterhood. 

Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, Sister Act will leave you breathless. Experience this sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship. Sister Act is reason to REJOICE!

Ladies of Na Wahine Waipahe Attend Lei O Lanikuhoua

The Ladies of Na Wahine Waipahe attended the 10th Annual Lei O Lanikuhonua Hula Festival on Friday February 26 2016 in beautiful Ko Olina on the west side of O’ahu. High school students throughout Hawai’i were treated to a fun-filled day of Hawaiian language and culture as they were blessed with the opportunity of learning hula from some of Hawaii's notable Hula masters of our time. 

 

Students were also delighted to see Academy alumna "Aunty" Suzanne MacFarlane Avina, '65, who is a strong supporter of the Hawaiian culture and always provides delicious malasadas for everyone to enjoy.

Celebrate the Holidays with Sugar Plums and Mice!

The Nutcracker has been a ballet holiday treat for about 120 years. The first performance of The Nutcracker was held in St. Petersburg, Russia at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre. Two of ballet’s most revered classical choreographers, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, are credited for the original ballet choreography set to the music of famed ballet composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
The original story of The Nutcracker, written by E.T.A. Hoffman, centers around the journey of a young girl named Marie. The magic begins when Marie is presented with a nutcracker by her favorite Godfather Drosselmeyer. At the stroke of midnight, the nutcracker comes to life to battle a giant horde of evil mice. When the battle has been won, the nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince, and in gratitude to Marie for helping win the battle, he escorts her to his enchanted Kingdom of Sweets where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and all of the prince’s loyal subjects.
Seven years ago, The Nutcracker premiered as a 20-minute lunchtime performance in the gymnasium of Sacred Hearts Academy. It has blossomed into a two-evening, full-length ballet Christmas affair onstage at Mamiya Theatre complete with snow, fog, and a holiday-themed craft and bake sale! This year’s cast includes 79 dancers from grades 7-12 featuring senior Academy dancers Maya Waldrep as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Jayla Wakabayashi as the Snow Queen, and sophomore Risa Ishii as the Dewdrop Fairy. Freshman Kira Stone will dance the role of Clara the young girl who experiences a magical Christmas battling evil mice to save her Sugar Plum Fairy and dancing with delicious sweets.Performances will be held on Friday Dec. 4^th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday Dec. 5^th at 7:00 p.m. at Mamiya Theatre. Tickets (reserved seating) are $10 plus processing fees at www.sacredhearts.org/tickets.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to a Casting Call

The Sacred Hearts Academy’s drama program will be producing "The Wizard of Oz”, for this fall’s musical, scheduled for performances in November. 

Auditions for "The Wizard of Oz” for Sacred Hearts Academy girls – grades five to 12 will be held at Mamiya Theatre on the Saint Louis School campus on August 24-25 from 5 pm to 630 pm.  Students auditioning should prepare to sing two songs, either acapella, or with a minus one track, and tell a joke.

Academy 6th Grader Dances in Hollywood Movie "Aloha"

Sacred Hearts Academy 6th grader Kauionalani Emond can add a Hollywood major motion picture to her future resume.  Emond was cast as a hula dancer for the movie "Aloha" starring Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams and Emma Stone. 

Filming took place in 2013 and the movie is set to be released in theaters on May 29, 2015. Emond and her family attended the Cast & Crew screening at Ward Theaters earlier this month and got to see Kaui and her hula sisters on the big screen. Watch for her in the very last scene of the movie and look for her name as the credits roll!

Distinguished Young Women of Hawaii Scholarship Finals

The Distinguished Young Women of Hawaii Scholarship Finals will be taking place at the Sacred Hearts Academy Auditorium on Sunday, February 8th at 1 PM. Pre-sale tickets are available from any participant or you may email dywhawaii@yahoo.com. Tickets at the door will be $25. 

This year, Sacred Hearts Academy has three young women competing for the Distinguished Young Women of Hawaii Scholarship. You can see their profiles and the profiles of the other contestants on the organization's Facebook Page. Sacred Hearts Academy's Dance Department presents "The Nutcracker"

The Dance Department has been busy rehearsing for this year's classic holiday performances of The Nutcracker. They have made appearances on KITV and KHON and have another appearance scheduled on Hawaii News Now. Tune into Hawaii News Now on Thursday, December 4, at approximately 8 AM to see Megan and Angel treat the viewers to a preview of Friday and Saturday evening's performances at Mamiya Theatre [Google Map].
