Academy Alumna Lands Summer Internship at University of Hawaii Cancer Center

Aiyana Arnobit, '19, was offered a position to participate in a summer internship at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center.

For eight weeks, Aiyana will be under the mentor-ship of Dr. John Shepherd and focus on research in Cancer Epidemiology under the Population Sciences in the Pacific Program.

At the end of the 8 weeks, Aiyana will be presenting a poster of her findings and what she has learned.

Alumnae Present at Annual Head of School Reception

Dr. Lisa Fong, '07
Lisa graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Biology. At Creighton University, she earned her Doctorate in Pharmacy. Currently works as a pharmacist at Times Supermarket. You may have seen her in a commercial for Times Pharmacy where she has been working since 2015. Lisa recently partnered with the Hawaii Department of Health to provide a Hepatitis B class that educated both at-risk members of the public and health care professionals.

Brittany Viloria, '12
Brittany graduated from Chaminade in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Criminology and a minor in Psychology. She currently works administratively with the Department of Justice. She is now pursuing her Master’s degree in Criminal Justice also at Chaminade.

Jaclyn Sakamoto, '15
Jaclyn will be graduating this May from the University of Hawaii Manoa with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, American Studies and Economics. She is a member of several UH organizations such as the Campus Climate Committee and the Pre Law Association, was a senator and now secretary with the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii. She has been accepted into the Seattle University School of Law this fall.

Academy 'Ohana Supports St. Baldrick's Foundation

Sacred Hearts Academy invites you to show your support of Academy Alumnae, Dr. Desiree Medeiros Glaser, '82, Alana Glaser, '18, and current sophomore, Alyse Glaser, '21, in their family effort to raise awareness and funds for the St. Baldrick's Foundation! 

Both Desiree and her husband, Dr. Darryl Glaser are Pediatric Oncologists at the Kapiolani Children’s Blood and Cancer Center. Their children, Alana and Alyse, have grown up knowing children with cancer and the devastating effects cancer can have, and are excited to join their mom and dad in support of these brave warriors and show their support toward Conquering Childhood Cancers. This year, the entire Glaser 'ohana has volunteered to shave their heads to raise money for Childhood Cancer Research and to show solidarity with children with cancer.


“The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer and donor powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.” Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has funded over $258,000,000 in research grants for Childhood Cancer Research with Honolulu events contributing to over $680,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. 


Join them at the 9th Annual Honolulu St Baldrick’s Event on April 28, 2019 at Mai Tai Bar at Ala Moana Shopping Center at 12 noon to 4 pm.

Seniors Kick-Off Graduation Festivities by Honoring 'Ohana

Following the theme “Stronger Together,” the seniors focused on the special members of their immediate and extended “family’ during the festive Senior ‘Ohana Luncheon on February 10 at the Pomaika’i Ballrooms. 

The memorable Luncheon included Olivia Bruce’s violin rendition of “Orange Blossom Special” and performances showcasing the talents of seniors and members of their families. 

Xavier Downey-Silva shared about her challenging transition to the Academy’s environment as a freshman, and how receiving a low grade from Gaylen Isaacs was a pivotal point that changed the trajectory of her life and set her on a path towards success. 

Eden Arthur honored Betty White during her speech, sharing tidbits of life “behind-the scenes,” having traveled with the school’s soon to-retire leader to China in the fall. 

The Luncheon kicks-off the festivities leading to graduation, and the talented seniors proudly debuted their touching class song, “Change the World” before the event concluded.

Alumnae Forum 2019

On Tuesday, January 8, Sacred Hearts Academy held its annual Alumnae Forum. This was a great opportunity for recent graduates to come back to the Academy and share their college experiences with our current students in grades seven thru 12. 

The 2019 Alumnae Forum boasted a record number, 33, of participating graduates representing nearly 20 different colleges and universities. Colleges such as St. Martins University, Boston University, Creighton University (NE), Fordham University (NY), George Washington University (DC), St. Bonaventure University (NY), Waynesburg University (PA), George Mason University (VA) and the University of Hawaii were represented.

Special guest speaker, Roxanne Solidum Bruhn, Sacred Hearts Academy alumna from the Class of 1973, shared her educational journey while providing

good insights to the senior and junior divisions during the forum.

Following the formal portion of the Forum, alumnae gathered in the Academy's gymnasium to host a mini

college fair with opportunities for students to ask questions of the alumnae directly and gather information on their respective colleges.

Aloha Academy Graduates!

I hope you are enjoying your Fall semester in college. We are getting ready for our annual Alumnae Forum, which will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates like yourself to come back to the Academy and share your college experiences with our current students. The Forum will be open to students in grades 7-12, and the format will be the same as last year.

The tentative schedule is for the Alumnae Forum to start after homeroom at 7:55 a.m – 9:15 a.m which includes a mini college fair, followed by a breakfast meal and fellowship for all of you.
More information will follow, but if you are able to attend, please email me back by next week with the following information:

• Cell Phone Number—Important!

If you are able to, please bring brochures, viewbooks, etc., from your college—you can check with the Admissions Office at your college; they will be more than happy to give you materials to distribute to students.

A Thanksgiving Prayer

Psalm 9:2-3 tells us "I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart;
I will declare all your wonderous deeds. I will delight and rejoice in you;
I will sing hymns to your name, Most High."

As we celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends and enter the Advent and Christmas liturgical seasons, let’s remember and thank God for all He has provided us.

We give thanks to God for grace He gives each one of us.

We give thanks to God for loving families, caring friends, and welcoming homes in a country that values gratitude, generosity, and service to one another.

We give thanks to God for the gift of Catholic education, especially for Sacred Hearts Academy and the mission of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

We give thanks to God for our vocation of teaching God’s children alongside all of our colleagues, an amazing team of dedicated educators and administrators who work together to help our students grow closer to Him.

We wish safe travels for all who are going to see loved ones near and far over the long weekend. And we leave our Academy 'ohana with this prayer of Thanksgiving. Have a truly blessed weekend.

Economics Students Visit Allison Izu - Ten Tomorrow

On Thursday Nov. 1 the Sacred Hearts Academy Economics class visited Allison Izu Song, '94, boutique "Ten Tomorrow" off of 11th Avenue. Allison Izu is a local designer and a distinguished alumna of the Academy. 

Although she herself could not be there for the visit, the girls were appreciative of the personalized tour of the shop and work space by her business partner, owner and designer of the brand Ten Tomorrow, Summer Shiigi. Ms. Shiigi also met with each project group to listen to listen to their business ideas and offered valuable advice, helping them to work out estimates for expenses and potential profit.

Mahalo to Allison Izu and Summer Shiigi for allowing our students this valuable experience!

Aloha From Fuzhou, Fujian, China!

A special message and update from Sacred Hearts Academy Head of School, Betty White, as she travels abroad with eight Academy "Trimble Scholars" guided by longtime Academy friends, Sonia & Gordon Trimble, and Noe Gunderson Oliver, '96, on a cultural exchange with students attending Hwa Nan Women's College in Fuzhou, Fujian, China.

"To be here in Fuzhou, Fujian, China, living on Hwa Nan Women's college campus and surrounded by Chinese educators and students, is an incredible experience. Our hosts are so very cordial, kind and hospitable. Our students are like sponges—soaking up every opportunity to learn and enjoy the experience.

For every activity or excursion, our students have a Chinese sister with them. Yesterday, Eden and Kira were interviewed by a cameraman about their experience so far, and they related how safe the Chinese Sisters made them feel. Later that day we gathered on the athletic field for games led by our hosts. Incredible —the same games I recall playing as a child, thousands of miles from China.  

Today’s schedule is packed—mountain climbing, having a vegetarian lunch prepared by monks, and attending a formal dinner in honor and memory of Bob Trimble, the late father of Gordon Trimble. We have experianced so much in the short time we have been here already; and are excited for the days ahead! We hope everyone had an enjoyable Fall Break and we look forward to sharing in our expereince with you all when we return home!" - Betty White, Sacred Hearts Academy Head of School

Academy Uncorked Floral Decor Request

Our Academy Uncorked committee needs your help! As our Sacred Hearts Academy 'ohana comes together to celebrate their love for the Academy and raise money for the Academy's Scholarship Fund, we kindly request tropical floral and greenery donations of: heliconia, parakeets, hanging heliconia (lobster claw), laua'e ferns, monstera leaves, anthuriums, gingers (red/pink/kahili/torch), green/red ti leaves and plumerias.

Academy Graduates Named NYSCamp Delegates

Catherine Palmer, '18, and Julia Oehlers, '18

Recent Sacred Hearts Academy graduates, Julia Oehlers and Catherine Palmer, have been selected as Hawaii delegates to the prestigious National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp) in West Virginia, June 27 – July 21. The residential science education program selects two high-achieving graduates from each state in the United States and from eight additional countries to participate in the all-expenses paid experience.

The NYSCamp is a broad science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experience that incorporates both creative and performing arts as well as an outdoor adventure series, including rock climbing, mountain biking, spelunking, whitewater kayaking, and overnight backpacking. Leading scientists from around the United States will lead seminars at the NYSCamp and will offer attendees directed study experiences. The NYSCamp delegation will also travel to Washington, D.C. to tour the museums on the National Mall, attend a Science Policy panel discussion at the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a luncheon in their honor with members of the United States Senate.

In the fall, Julia, a National Merit Scholar, will attend the University of Oklahoma majoring in biology and Catherine will major in pre-medicine at Creighton University.

Celebration of Life for Gwen Marino Aiwohi, '53

Today, the Sacred Hearts Academy faculty, staff, alumnae, family and friends mourn the loss of Gwen Marino Aiwohi, '53, who peacefully went home to God on the evening of Saturday, January 13th. She was 82 years old and was a familiar face on the Sacred Hearts Academy campus for many years having worked in the Admissions office alongside Karen Muramoto, Admissions Director.
