E Mele Kakou 23rd Annual Festival a Huge Success

After working hours preparing for the E Mele Kakou Festival hosted by the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus and Coro and Cantilena Ensembles, our Sacred Hearts Academy choir beautifully rendered, "Imagine a World" by David Waggoner to a standing room only audience at the majestic Kawaiaha'o Church on Saturday, March 3. 

The Academy's young vocalists also joined all festival participants in singing "All Things Bright and Beautiful" by John Rutter and "E Mele Aku ia lehova" by Herb Mahelona. What a wonderful experience for our young vocalists singing with such talented youth!

Mrs. Deb Okada, Sacred Hearts Academy Lower School Choral Director, led the Academy's choir in these efforts and was assisted by parent chaperones - Danielle Taketa, Marian Redd.

A group of Select Choir singers will be traveling to the ACDA (American Choral Directors' Association) Youth Treble Honor Choir Festival in Pasadena, California from March 14 - 17, 2018 accompanied by Mrs. Okada and Mrs. Hayashi. We wish the ladies the best in their upcoming performances and safe travels to all!

NAVFAC Celebrates #EngineeringDay at SHA

For the third straight year, the NAVFAC Pacific (Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific) sponsored #EngineeringDay at the Academy with the goal of educating and inspiring Academy students about science and engineering fields they might consider pursuing as future careers. 

NAVFAC engineers, scientists, and architects gave short introductions of themselves, their positions and their personal journey into their given field of interest. After the presentations, students got involved in fun and educational interactive displays and demonstrations with the NAVFAC personnel.

Many thanks to Helen Chou and Chief Engineer Ralph Luca for organizing and bringing this outstanding annual opportunity to Sacred Hearts Academy!

More than 1,400 students from across the state submitted videos, essays and posters to the 8th Annual "Inspired in Hawaii" Poster, Essay and Video Contest sponsored by The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation. Students were prompted to find the inspiration to "dream big and make Hawaii a better place."

Lower School Book Club Makes SHA Nene History

For one hour on February 13th, 2018, Sacred Hearts Academy's Grades 4-6 Nene Book Club members found themselves in the Lower School Library competing in a match up against Maemae Elementary students playing Nene Jeopardy via Google Hangout.

Nene Jeopardy is a book trivia contest that tests students' knowledge on 30 chapter books.

Not only did the girls win the trivia competition, they did not miss a single question - a first in Sacred Hearts Academy Nene History! Way to go ladies! Job well done!

Mahealani Sims Tulba Named 2018 Hawaii's Top Youth Volunteer

Congratulations Mahealani Sims Tulba, ’18, on being named one of Hawaii’s top two youth volunteers of 2018 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism! As a Hawaii State Honoree Mahea will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in April to Washington, DC, where she will join the top two honorees from each of the other states and the District of Columbia for four days of national recognition events.

Mahea created a nonprofit foundation, B.R.A.V.E. Hawaii, to communicate about the problem of bullying of students throughout Hawaii. After Mahealani experienced firsthand the destructive power of bullying in the fifth grade, she wrote a book about it and began using the book as a tool to reach out to other young people. 

"I realized that there are many others in the same situation as me. I wanted to spread my message of positivity, encouragement, kindness and respect for others." -Mahealani Sims Tulba, '18

Mahea formed her foundation and then started asking schools and libraries if she could come and read to their kids and talk about bullying. On these visits, she distributes copies of her book, "It's Okay to Be Different," along with silicon bracelets, and sometimes brings along her mascot Buddy the Bulldog.

Mahealani has spoken in front of thousands of elementary, middle level and high school students statewide, and participated in numerous community events to make both youngsters and parents aware of bullying issues. She has also created a music video on the subject, appeared on a weekly television program, and conducted an annual toy drive for children in need. By her count, Mahea's "B.R.A.V.E." campaign (which stands for "Be Respectful and Value Everyone") has so far reached more than 40,000 students across Hawaii.

Way to go Mahea! We look forward to supporting you as you compete to be recognized at the National level of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Washington, DC, this April!
