Ladies of Na Wahine Waipahe Attend Lei O Lanikuhoua

The Ladies of Na Wahine Waipahe attended the 10th Annual Lei O Lanikuhonua Hula Festival on Friday February 26 2016 in beautiful Ko Olina on the west side of O’ahu. High school students throughout Hawai’i were treated to a fun-filled day of Hawaiian language and culture as they were blessed with the opportunity of learning hula from some of Hawaii's notable Hula masters of our time.

Students were also delighted to see Academy alumna "Aunty" Suzanne MacFarlane Avina, '65, who is a strong supporter of the Hawaiian culture and always provides delicious malasadas for everyone to enjoy.

"I am delighted to have heard from many of my Hula confidants that the Academy's hula students were not only well-trained but also very respectful to the kumu, haumana, and the aina as well. I am glad share that our girls truly carried out their name as Na Wahine Waipahe, the gentle-ladies, of Sacred Hearts Academy with elegance and grace. A job well done." - Jordan Asing, Hula Instructor

Academy Students Tend Lo'i in He'eia

Academy fourth grade Hawaiian Studies' students had a great time spending a day at the Papahana Kuaola site of Waipao, located in the ahupua'a of He'eia.  Here, the students learned about Hawaii's cultural and natural history, environmental restoration, and economic sustainability, all fully integrated to exemplify a lifestyle respectful of kanaka (people), aina (land), and akua (god).

Sabrina Kopf and Paige Fullerton went into the lo'i (kalo patch) to get a sample of one of the native plants they had studied about in Hawaiiana. They also helped by ridding the lo'i of any invasive grass and weeds.

Academy Choir Compete in All State Choral Festival: Nā Leo Hou

Over the weekend, the Sacred Hearts Academy Concert Choir and Select Choir participated in Nā Leo Hou: Hawai‘i's All-State Choral Festival.  The students performed six selections with 240 singers from Oahu, Kaua‘i, and the big island under the direction of nationally renowned clinician, Tesfa Wondemagegnehu.  In addition to singing together, each school choir completed a sight-reading examination and were adjudicated in individual performances. The Academy's combined Concert and Select Choir received a Superior rating in sightreading, one of only three schools to receive the rating. Additionally the Academy received a Superior rating and the HIGHEST score of any school for their performance of the song "No Time."

A special congratulations to , Tefsa Wondemagegnehu who took the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend, Michelle Bendett, during the concert!  The students sang an arrangement of John Legend's All of Me that our very own Dr. Alec Schumacker created specifically for Tesfa and the special surprise. She said yes! Congratulations and we wish you a lifetime of happiness together.
