East-West Center Senior Journalists Seminar

Sacred Hearts Academy Student Activities Director Toni Normand recently had the opportunity to mix and mingle with 17 international journalists from Asia, the Middle East and the United States. The Senior Journalists Seminar, hosted by the East West Center and Hawaii's Shagri La, is a 21-day professional dialogue, study and travel program intended to enhance media coverage and elevate the public debate regarding religion and its role in the public sphere, specifically as it concerns U.S. relations with the Muslim world.

The seminar offers an opportunity for participating journalists to engage their peers, experts, and the public on issues relevant to US Relations with the Muslim World. Toni Normand, Sacred Hearts Academy Dir.
Of Student Activities, had the opportunity to attend and meet many influential women like Ethar El-Katatney of AJ+. Attendees met to better understand the impact of religion on government policy, finance, education and culture, and the arts.

8/24: UPDATE Parent/Guardian Message from Betty White

Hello Parents and Guardians:

All areas of the islands have their specific set of circumstances with today's weather.  In Kaimuki, it seemed that the heaviest rain was between 2 and 3 a.m.  As late as 5:30 a.m., we thought it was just going to be a rainy, wet day with lots of traffic issues.  However, as daylight approached, challenges emerged.

The electricians thought the weather tripped the main breaker, and the school lost electricity to Marian, Primary and Ching Buildings.  Of course, the A/C chillers were also impacted.

There was also some flooding of the ground floor of the Administration Building.  The Library had the biggest intake of water.

Electricians were called in immediately, and electricity was restored by 10 o'clock; the professional company, helping us with the flooding, was out of the school by about 1 pm.

We apologize for the inconvenience this situation caused your families.  Even though, we communicated with you that the school was fully staffed to take care of the students, and we were committed to do so until the end of the day, about 95% of your daughters were picked up during the morning hours.

Bar any other concerns, we will be operational tomorrow.  In fact, by noon today, the sky was blue, and it was a beautiful day here on campus.

For students in grades 7-12, B Day schedule will be skipped, and teachers asked me to share that tomorrow will be C Day.

Thank you for your cooperation and concern; we look forward to seeing your daughters tomorrow morning.

8/24: Parent/Guardian Message from Betty White

Hello Parents & Guardians:
It is only in the daylight hours that we are able to assess the damage from the storm. If you have not dropped your daughters off yet, please keep them at home.
The girls who are on campus will be well taken cared of. They can be picked up at your convenience. We are experiencing flooding and electrical concerns in some buildings.
We will keep you posted. Thanks for your patience.

Academy Faculty & Staff Gear Up For New School Year

Sacred Hearts Academy welcomed two special guest speakers on campus as a part of the week leading to the first day of school.

Mahalo to Jeaney Garcia with the Positive Coaching Alliance who spoke with the Academy's faculty on staff providing lots of great tips on communicating positively, working together and being a good sport. Teachers are excited to implement some of these strategies into their classes in the coming weeks!

Another special mahalo goes to Dr. Paul Singer of Assets School for sharing valuable insights with the faculty and staff on working with Independent School Parents. Many valuable insights were shared with lots of take away pointers.

As a finale to a week's worth of learning; the faculty and staff gathered at St. Anthony's Retreat Center in Kalihi for a rejuvenating retreat.
